Enemies of the Heart

Andy Stanley is a pastor in Georgia. His book discusses four emotions that weigh people down. He draws from observations from his own life as well as what he has observed in the lives of others. The four emotions are greed, jealousy, anger, and guilt. I found a lot of Stanley’s points to be useful. I liked the fact that he used ancedotes from his own life to illustrate a few points. It was nice that he did not put himself on a pedestal. One point about forgiveness that Stanley made is, if someone has wronged you in some way, ie destroyed your marriage, ruined your childhood by not being there, etc., there is no way to get that back. He advises readers to cancel the debt. This is a point that I will need to work on in my life as I let go of some issues I realized I was still holding onto as I read this book. I received this book from Multnomah and am under no obligation to give a favorable review.

I liked this book. I was a little taken back by how reserved Aaron’s father was towards him, but I understood his reluctant nature. I did not like Elam and his treatment of the sisters. It was interesting, that even in the Amish community, there are those who are not pure of heart. I wish I had read the previous novels beforehand. While Woodsmall kept her readers up to speed, there is still something to be said about knowing about the characters.
